Where human approval belongs in an AI workflow.

Use AI for preparation and speed while keeping consequential decisions in the right hands.

01

Separate preparation from action

Researching, summarizing, and drafting are different from sending, publishing, changing records, or making commitments. Design the workflow so it is obvious when an assistant is preparing something and when a person is authorizing the next step.

02

Give reviewers the context they need

A reviewer should see the original request, the proposed result, the relevant source information, and the action that will happen after approval. Approval is not useful if it requires someone to reconstruct the whole situation from scratch.

03

Constrain access to the actual job

Give an assistant only the information and tools its task requires. A drafting assistant does not automatically need permission to send messages. A reporting assistant may need read access without permission to edit source records.

04

Plan for uncertainty

An assistant should have a clear fallback when it cannot find enough information or the request falls outside its task. Escalating a case to a person is a useful outcome. Inventing an answer to keep the workflow moving is not.

05

Review representative examples before launch

Try common requests, ambiguous inputs, missing data, and requests that should be refused or escalated. Agree on acceptable behavior and inspect real cases after launch. Keep the ability to pause or revise the workflow.
