AI agents vs chatbots: what is the difference?

Why a chat widget on your site and an agent that does work are different purchases.

01

A chatbot talks

A chatbot answers questions in a chat window. It is useful for FAQs and simple guidance, but on its own it rarely changes anything in your business: it does not update your CRM, send the quote, or book the job.

02

An agent does a job

An agent has a defined task, access to the tools that task needs, and rules about what it may do. It might read an inquiry, look up your terms, draft the reply, and file the conversation in your CRM, all before you open your inbox.

03

Why the difference matters for risk

Because agents act, they need boundaries a chatbot does not: which accounts they can touch, what they may never do, and which steps wait for a person. Designing those limits is most of the work, and the part to ask any provider about.

04

Which one you need

If your problem is visitors asking the same questions, a chatbot or a better FAQ may be enough. If your problem is recurring work eating your week, you want an agent, and you want it to hand you drafts to approve rather than send things on its own.

Make it specific to your business.
